Kent spinner James Tredwell has told KSN how he is delighted to have been given the chance to play for England once again.
The 30 year old off spinner has been called into the England squad for Friday’s One Day International against the West Indies at Headingley after the selectors opted to give Graeme Swann a rest.
Tredwell last played for England in the World Cup back in March 2011, but was selcted for the recent Test tour of Sri Lanka in March and April.
The Kent spinner will join up with his England team-mates on Thursday after playing in the Spitfires game against the Essex Eagles at Chelmsford on Wednesday night.
After five appearances for England in the One Day format, Tredwell is hoping that he will be given the chance to play on Friday and add to the four wickets he has taken for the side:
“It’s nice to know that the selectors are still keeping an eye on me having spent the last few months working away in county cricket. It’s also nice to know that if anything were to happen to Graeme Swann, I’m the next replacement.”
“I only found out on Tuesday night and they were lucky to get me as I was just on my way out, but I’m absoultely delighted.”
“There’s no indication that I will be playing, but obviously they have decided to rest three guys who have been pivotal to the success of the side. We have been added to the original squad and they will make a selection from that.”
“With a bit of luck I’ll be selected, but saying that the weather doesn’t look great. That’s been the story of the summer though and we’ve lost a lot of overs already due to the weather.”
Tredwell will join up with Surrey bowlers Stuart Meaker and Jade Dernbach for the Headingley game, just days after they all played against one another in the Twenty 20 game at Beckenham which turned out to be the last time Tom Maynard was to play cricket.
The 23 year old was found dead on Monday morning and Tredwell told KSN how he was shocked by the news:
“We had training on Tuesday morning and it was the hot topic of conversation and it was hard to take in that we had shaken his hand at the end of that game and just hours later he was killed.”
“It brings it home as to how close you are and how short life can be. Unfortunately, Tom is no longer with us and he will be sadly missed as he was a great talent.”
“Tom’s death will come as a huge blow to Jade and Stuart as they were great mates and I’m sure they’ll be playing for him on Friday.”
